France - chambre d'hote or b & b?
B & B, Chambre d'Hote? What's the difference? In practice we mean the same thing these days, but it is interesting to realise that the French phrase "chambre d'hote" means literally "room of the host", and like "table d'hote" is believed to be many hundred of years old. It dates back to the days before organised bed and breakfast hotels existed when passing travellers would stay in a spare room at a "hosts" house and share whatever food and drink was on the communal table. The term B&B is a more contemporary description, originally from the UK, but now used in many Western countries for home based accommodation offering bed and breakfast. Sometimes you can even spy the signs for B&B in France!
