Wine
Le Cap d’Agde is situated in the Herault department of the Languedoc-Roussillon - one of the oldest wine producing regions in France. The Greeks and Romans who arrived here over 2500 years ago introduced vines to the region and now the Languedoc-Roussillon as a whole is the largest wine producing region in France. Much of the farmland around Le Cap d’Agde, known as the Herault Mediterranée territory, is given over to vines, which grow in fertile soils under the Mediterranean sun and are blended to create some of the region’s most prized wines: the Picpoul de Pinet - a white wine perfectly matched to the sea food and fish dishes of the region; the Clairette du Languedoc and Clairette d’Adissan - dry or sweet white wines, great as an aperitif or with foie gras or cheese; and the red Coteaux du Languedoc, ideal with meat, poultry, and cheese.

Specialities
Along with the wine, the area around Le Cap d’Agde has a wealth of culinary specialities and delicacies for you to try, such as oysters and mussels from the Etang de Thau; bourride - a delicious garlicky monkfish stew; croustade of Bessan, a flake pastry filled with a mixture of raisins or chocolate and walnuts: figs from Nezignan-l'Eveque; the petit pâté from Pezenas - a sweet and salty, spool-shaped pastry; and also honey, fruit jelly, sweets, meats, melons, peppers etc. Local gastronomy reflects all the Mediterranean flavours and local restaurants at Le Cap d’Agde are amongst the best of the region - especially for seafood and fish, and local wines!

Markets
A wonderful way of discovering local produce is to visit one of the many markets at the resort - in fact, in the summer, there are markets every day of the week at different locations in at least one of the four destinations of the resort! Filling the streets with wonderful flavours, colours and passionate bartering - the market place is one of the most enduring images of the traditional way of life that is still so much a part of French identity. Contact the Cap d’Agde Tourist Office for detailed annual schedules for the markets.
