The nearest airports are Bordeaux, Bergerac and La Rochelle.Monday is market day and the town is buzzing, with so many stools onmre can buy all kinds of local delights, including cheeses and Cognac. Chalais is in fact only an hour's drive from Cognac the brandy capital of the Poitou Charentes region. Various entertainment is held in this small town including a show jumping competrition each August. Aubeterre sits high up above a bend in the river Dronne. Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is now classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. There is the underground Church of Saint Jean, known as the monolithic Church, as well as the Saint Jacques Church, Museums, Potters and some interesting little shops. The central square of Place Trarieux is a lovely place to sit among the Linden trees and enjoy cuisine or a coffee from one of the eateries. Village properties are rarely on the market and when they are, they are very soughty and so highly priced.
