Avignon guide
Avignon is situated on the left bank of the Rhône in Provence, Southern France. The city is rich in cultural heritage, well-known for its Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes). It is the largest gothic palace in the world and became residence of the papacy in 1309, for more than a century. The palace’s interior is exquisite, rich with Frescoes. Today, the palace is largely open to the public and houses a large convention centre.
The
Avignon festival is a famous theatrical festival held every July in the palace's magnificent grounds. It attracts visitors from all over the world. Productions range from grand classical plays at the palace, to amateur productions on every street corner. The street performances are colourful and bohemian and vary in art form from music to dance. The festival certainly makes great use of the city’s historical monuments.
Avignon is surrounded by 4.3 km of preserved stone ramparts, which were built by the popes in 14th century to encircle Avignon, and are one of the finest examples of medieval fortification in existence. it is no surprise that Avignon was the capital of the medieval western world. The medieval Saint Bénézet Bridge, over the Rhône River, attracts many visitors whom associate it with the famous song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon.”
Other historic and cultural attractions include the 12th century Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral, a fabulous Romanesque building. Inside the Cathedral are many stunning works of art. The Petiti Palace, overlooked by Palais des Papes, has an exceptional collection of Renaissance paintings and works by Botticelli, Carpaccio and Giovanni di Paolo. Museé Calvet, a beautifully restored 18th century palace also boasts a fine art collection.
Being bustling and animated student city there is a great reasonably priced places to eat out. But for a more elaborate meal, Christian Étienne makes for an unmissable gastronomic experience, not only are the grounds fabulous – a leafy outdoor terrace in a 12th century palace neighbouring the Palais des Papes but the dishes are seasonal, including tasty truffle ice-cream.
