 Pardons and Fest NozLocal traditions
Pardons A pardon is a religious festival held once a year at a church to honor the local patron saint. Sometimes it involves only the small village church, for others it involves the whole parish and many churches. There is usually a procession with the priests at the head, and all the people following and singing, and carrying the colorful banners of their churches. These have been going on since the middle ages and before in Brittany. Fest Noz Fest Noz are often held in conjuction with a Pardon but not always. A fest-noz involves much food and drink, and above all music and dancing. All kinds of Breton and other celtic music can be heard, from very traditional singers and instrumentalists, to younger bands with rock or jazz influences. The dances are always traditional Breton dances done in a circle (or many circles). They usually last all night and some dancers claim to be put into a trance by dancing hours on end.
