It may be winter but there's still plenty to keep you occupied in Brittany. This selection of museums will appeal to everyone from kids to adults. Musée des Transmissions - Espace Ferrié technology museum - CESSON-SEVIGNE (RENNES) New! “From the primitive tribe to the global village”. Enjoy the fun and interactive way in which the Espace Ferrié recounts the historical and technological evolution of civil and military development. Will appeal to everyone: from children to engineers. http://museetrans.free.fr Musée de La Faucillonnaie heritage museum – VITRE A rural heritage museum set in a 15th to 17th century manor house in the Vitré area. The ground floor of the museum is set up like a farmhouse with typical rural furniture and local handicrafts. Upstairs represents the master craftsman’s house. http://www.mairie-vitre.com Musée du Château museum – Vitre Housed in the Château de Vitré, the museum was founded in 1876 by Arthur de la Broderie in the spirit of encyclopaedism of the time. Introduction to the château dating from the 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th centuries. Decorative objects reflecting the history of Vitré. http://www.mairie-vitre.com Atelier-Musée de l'Horlogerie watchmakers' museum - FOUGERES In the magnificent setting of a 16th century building at Fougères the watchmaking museum and workshop will please your eyes and unveil the secrets of clocks on buildings, Louis XV wallclocks, and the antique watches of your ancestors. Email: routedulin@wanadoo.fr Briqueterie museum - LANGUEUX Set in the heart of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc on the site of a former tile factory, the Briqueterie museum tells the story of human activity in the bay. The museum includes: the history of the bay's salt merchants, market gardeners and fishermen; the history of the "Cotes du Nord" train which helped open up and develop this area; a working model train and life-size display of a station platform and carriage and the 30-metre gallery of the former industrial oven. Email: briqueterie@cabri22.com Ernest Renan's birthplace and museum - TREGUIER In the centre of this Small Town of Character and former Bishop’s town, the birthplace of Ernest Renan (1823-1892), a half-timbered town house dating from the late 16th century, houses a collection of documents, furniture, objects, paintings and photographs in memory of this famous 19th century writer and thinker. Email: maisonrenan@wanadoo.fr Musée de l’école rurale en Bretagne - TREGARVAN This old school was built at the dawn of the 20th century at the foot of Ménez-Hom and the gates of the Crozon peninsula. It has now been turned into a museum showing the world of schoolchildren and teachers through various objects, documents and tableaux. The Year 2005 exhibition : “History and present of Secularism” musee.ecole.bretagne@wanadoo.fr Morlaix museum – Morlaix After the permanent collection rooms in the Eglise des Jacobins were closed, the Musée des Jacobins became the Musée de Morlaix and is now based in two locations, namely the Maison à Pondalez and Les Jacobins. “Regards sur la collection” periodically highlights aspects of the collection in Les Jacobins exhibition room, alternating with traditional temporary exhibitions and “L’oeuvre choisie” at the Maison à Pondalez. Les Jacobins: 18 March to 29 May Nguyen Cam “Vents & marées”(Winds & Tides) - Paintings: 24 June to 29 October Breton men and women in the Museum’s “Peintures et arts populaires” (Paintings and popular arts) collection La Maison à Pondalez (Historical monument) This is a half-timbered house dating back to the 16th century, featuring a monumental granite fireplace, spiral staircase and wood panelled passageways set round a vast central area. Works and objects in the collection portray the daily lives of the local people and the architecture and history of Morlaix. http://www.morlaix.fr Musée de la Pêche Fishing museum - CONCARNEAU The fishing museum, set in the remarkable surroundings of Concarneau’s walled town, presents 1500 square metres on the history and techniques of sea fishing around the world. During a two-hour visit, ist slide shows, models, displays and boats will tell you who fishes for what, where and how, how boats are made and fish are preserved. You can also go aboard the Hemerica, a 34-metre trawler anchored at the museum’s quayside, and explore it from hold to wheelhouse, wardroom to stores. The shop has books, posters, maps, models and maritime souvenirs, many of them exclusive to this museum. It houses rich collections of archaeology, ancient art, and the popular art of Finistère, including precious metalwork, statues and stained glass. There are two floors devoted to Breton arts and traditions, such as costumes, furniture, Quimper pottery, etc. musee.breton@CG29.fr Musée national de la Marine – Brest With its wonderful views over the natural harbour, ports and the Penfeld exhibition centre and its perfect setting at the heart of Brest’s shopping and military districts, this castle is the most beautiful of all Breton strongholds. Built on 3rd-century Gallo-Roman remains, it bears witness to a rich yet turbulent past. The Musée National de la Marine, set in the Tour Madelaine, Portail Paradis and imposing keep, holds incredible collections that recount the history of the French Navy and its close links with the town. http://www.musee-marine.fr Capitaine d’un jour (Captain for a day) – VANNES “Capitaine d’un jour” is a fun way to learn about the history of the Gulf of Morbihan which was strongly influenced by maritime activity. Themes: oyster farming, fishing, shipbuilding and coastal navigation. Email: capitaine-dun-jour@wanadoo.fr Escal’ Atlantic - SAINT-NAZAIRE Escal’Atlantic - The International Ocean Liner Centre, housed in a former submarine base, provides the perfect opportunity to find out all about legendary ocean liners of today and yesterday. Become a passenger and explore the areas on board ship which are so symbolic of the great transatlantic liners: luxury cabins, dining rooms, the wheelhouse and promenade decks. This year, Escal’Atlantic continues its exhibition “Le Temps des Voyages” (The age of travel) and focuses on the years from France to Queen Mary 2. Hitherto unseen films and photos will take you on a glamorous voyage. In the harbour, you can also discover the submarine Espadon with its new audio tour, the “Chantiers de l’Atlantique” shipyards, the Airbus factory and the heritage museum Ecomusee. http://www.saint-nazaire-tourisme.com Musée des Marais Salants salt marsh museum - BATZ-SUR-MER This museum is the ideal way to begin your tour of the salt marshes (a listed site).
