Carpentras guide

Carpentras is situated in the Vancluse department of Southern France in between Avignon and Orange. The origins of Carpentras date back to 5 BC and having been a Gallo Roman city, Greek trading centre, and during the 14th century the Papal headquarters it has had a rich history ever since.

On Fridays the town livens up with a myriad of market stools – over 300 in fact, selling all kinds of local produce such as breads, honeys, cheeses, olives, fruits and nuts. In the Winter Carpentras even has a delightful truffle market and hosts a festival in order to mark the beginning of the truffle season Fête de St Siffrein. During this festival, it is the only time that the Cathedral of St Siffrein’s sacred art can be seen. The Cathedral of St Siffrein was built between 1405 and 1519 in Méridional, Gothic style.

Roman remains can still be seen in this historic town including both the remains of a triumphal arch built in the 1st century AD and a 7th century Cathedral. An Episcopal palace and aqueduct remains can also be seen. The Musée Comladin has artefacts and information about local history and folklore. Each July the town also enjoys a two week, music, dance and theatre, open air festival. Carpentras is a great base for a holiday with so many towns, and the Azure coast within easy reach. In Carpentras itself pleasant townhouses and apartments are available in the centre, further out one can buy villas and property with more land, though villas in the department are high in demand so prices tend to be expensive. Due to the popularity of the area houses in need of renovation are few and far between.

Good places to eat include the Château de Mazan – this magnificent castle has its own restaurant L’Ingénue which serves gourmet food in aristocratic settings. The castle was the home of the Marquis de Sade in the 18th century and it has thirty regal rooms – most of which can be visited. The Franck Restaurant is a stylish alternative with its low-lit bar and heavenly truffle menu.
