Charente Maritime guideCharente Maritime is a department of Poitou-Charentes in the South West of the region. It is just one of four departments in the region, the others being Deux Sévres, Vienne and Charente with North Charente. The department can be reached easily by La Rochelle Poitiers, Nantes and Bordeaux airports. The TGV train will also take you to La Rochelle.The department's warm climate and 420km of sandy beaches make it popular with visitors and property investors alike. The Charente Maritime coast is however alot quieter than the Cote d'Azur. Inland fields of yellow sunflowers add even more sun to the department, while rolling hills make great walking opportunities. Scattered throughout the department the historic and cultural influences of this land can be seen with much Romanesque Architecture. Saintes has a particuarly attractive Roman centre. La Rochelle, the department's chic capital has much to offer with its charming 14th century towers and modern marina. With a high student poulation the town is always bustling and eventful. Many festivals are held in La Rochelle including its own jazz and film festivals. The night life is also vibrant ad there are many great restaurants serving very fresh fruits of the sea. If the mainland's glorious beaches are not secluded enough for you then one of Charente Maritime's three islands may suit you better. The biggest island Re, is encircled by sandy beaches and great for a relaxing break. The other islands are Orleron - a fortress from the 19th century, while the smallest of them all Aix, can only be reached by boat and has no cars; on the island one really does feel a million miles from the mainland. Property is fast increasing in price as the department gets more popular. The most desireable and pricey locations include La Rochelle and Ile d' Re, but the financial return can be great in such locations as the rental market is very active. Inland property is more affordable and there are still a great number of renovation opportunities to be found. Whether you want a holiday cottage to rent out or simply as a second home there are many on the market. Overall, the Charente Maritime property market is very reasonable considering that it is prime coastal location. This coastal department has of course an abundance of locally caught fish and oysters and not only is it delicious and very fresh but very reasonaby priced.
