Charente guide

Charente is a department of Poitou Charentes in the South East of the region. It is just one of four departments in Poitou Charentes, the others being Deux Sévres, Charente Maritime and Vienne. Charente also has a significant North section - North Charente with its deep forests and peaks reaching over 1000ft. The department can be reached easily by Poitiers and Limoges airports.

The countryside is a varied and beautiful and offers great scenery for walkers and cyclists, it has many rolling hills - the backdrop for sleepy villages with Romanesque churches. Farming is the region's greatest economy and the rural landscape is ideal for such an industry. Not far behind is its brandy industry - the mass production of its world famous Cognac drink.

Cognac is Charente's best known town, though its capital is Angoulême. The medieval town buzzes with atmosphere and the old town is a delightful maze of 15th - 17th century buildings. You can have a guided tour of one of the many central Congnac houses or instead visit one of the glowing vineyards. Each vineyard has its own Chateau, which has for centuries produced this famous golden elixir. Cognac is also starting point for relaxing and picturesque cruises on the pretty River Charente.

Jarnac, situated between Cognac and Angoulême is also a Cognac producing town with many historic sites to see. Each October the town has a colourful festival to celebrate its delicious chocolate. Jarnac is right on the River Charente making it even more of an idylic place for visitors. View our Charente holiday rentals.

Angoulême known as the “Versailles of Charente” is the departmental capital and has not only an intriguing old town, with many historical buildings including St Pierre's Cathedral, but a bustling new town. Its fantastic ramparts encircle the town and can be walked right around, they also have panoramic views of the Charente Valley. Angoulême is also known for its many vibrant festivals including the Circuit des Ramparts Motor Racing Event.

Many Parisian property buyers chose Charente, which has in recent years increased prices. The advantage of Charente is its strong rental market. Angoulême has the most expensive properties but also the best rate of return for renting out. Some buyers prefer to purchase a property in one of the beautiful villages outside the main towns as this way both rural and urban Charente life can be enjoyed.
