Deux Sévres guide
Deux Sévres is a department of Poitou Charentes in the North West of the region and literally means two rivers because it has both Rivers Sévre Nantaise and Sévre Niortaise running through. It is just one of four departments in Poitou Charentes, the others being
Charente Maritime,
Vienne and
Charente with
North Charente. The department can be reached easily by Poitiers, Nantes and La Rochelle airports.
The prosperous town
Niort is the capital of the Deux Sévres department but also the french capital of mutual insurance and bank companies and because of this, has been described as the most bourgeois town in France. The centre of Niort is charming with many stone and half-timbered houses overlooking the streets. This ancient centre is a stark contrast to all the modern companies now in the town.
Charron is both the region and country's centre for mussel farming, based on Aiguillon Bay and there are of course many fabulous sandy beaches, pretty marinas and bustling resorts all along the Atlantic coast. On the coast all kinds of water activities from wind surfing to ski-jetting are possible. View our

On the Rivers too, cruises can be enjoyed and the Marais Poitevin National Park has been called the "Green Venice" for its many miles of canals; it is also likened to the Norfolk Broads. The department's luxurious green vegetation changes as you approach the coast; Deux Sévres certainly has a spectacular and contrasting countryside enhanced by its warm climate.
Although house prices have been pushed up recently by increased demand amongst foreign and Parisian buyers, prices in the department still represent excellent value for money. Farming is the departments major industry and in Deux Sévres one can experience true rural french life and its slow pace.
Prices in the department are generally very good value despite their increase in recent years due to the demand of Parisian and overseas second home buyers. Property in the Deux Sévres though, has excellent rental potential because the region has so much to offer.
