Dinan guideDinan lies on the banks of the River Rance and is a Breton jewel. If you arrive by boat up the Rance into the pretty port, the medieval town looks glorious. The town has charming historical significance and is still surrounded by a 3km encirclement of ramparts dating back to the 13th century. Dinan has street after street of enchanting medieval houses. The nearest airport is Dinard.A big attraction of the town is Saint Saveur Church with its 18th century, Romanesque Porch. The town also has nine gothic chapels. In the heart of the town, two small squares place des Merciers and the place des Cordeliers, are home to Dinan’s finest medieval wood framed houses. Château de Duchesse Anne is worth visiting and one can access both its towers. Fête des Remparts is a two day medieval festival which takes place every other year, attracting 40,000 visitors and the whole town participates. Property in Dinan is very desireable, and more centrally quite expensive in relation to other parts of Brittany. Each Thursday place du Guesclin comes alive with a large market. Though the night life is quiet, there are some good restaurants in Dinan, including Le Chablis, which serves traditional French cuisine and is known for its delicious seafood platters.
