Grenoble guide

Grenoble is a cultural city as well as an excellent ski resort and hosts a number of theatrical events and festivals throughout the year such as a music festival. It has its own airport and is on the TGV line.

The city has both a medieval old town and vibrant modern side too. The old quarter has interesting quaint corners and attractive squares. Around the Place de Verdun and Rue Voltaire the stunning historical architecture is not tainted but enhanced by the glass and steel architecture of modern Grenoble. A number of museums and art galleries can be discovered on Grenoble’s streets, including Le Magasin, museum of modern art.

A wide range of shops including chic designer boutiques and tempting chocolatiers go hand in hand with the antique and flea markets which surround Place de Verdun and Rue Voltaire; the centre is pedestrianised. The majority of restaurants and bars in Grenoble are of very top quality. View our Grenoble holiday rentals.

Grenoble is known for its fantastic skiing, and around the city beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and if looking down on the city after taking a cable car to Belvedere the city’s scenery is even more spectacular.

Nearby is Alpe d’Huez, Les Deux Alpes, Mèribel and Courchevel are all within easy reach of the city; the mountains offer great sporting opportunities whether it be skiing and snow boarding by winter or walking and rock climbing by summer.

Property prices in and around Grenoble are high, which is not surprising as buyers have the advantages of living in both city and ski resort. The rental market is strong in the Alps. Property buying in Grenoble is therefore a sound investment, after all, whether you want an Alpine chalet or city apartment you are never far from the slopes.
