Mountain Holiday Rentals in Summer

Don't miss out!

Staying in French mountain property during the summer is a whole different world to any other kind of holiday. If you think of the mountains as just for winter sports, you're missing out! We find out more from Dawn Lyde, who owns a holiday rental property near the Pyrenees.

Health spa
Aquensis health spa
'Paul and I have been in the Lot for many years running a successful golf/cottage holiday. We fell in Love with the area the position of the house and the whole ambience of the place. Now we have set up a similar venue in the Hautes-Pyrenees, where the nearest town, Bagnères du Bigorre (near Lourdes), is lively and bi-seasonal. Bagnères has all the amenities of a large town whilst still maintaining the ambiance of village life. It has excellent restaurants, and many cultural events, art exhibitions and festivals. It even has a really good challenging golf course that is free for our guests, making the holiday a very reasonable combination.

The summer there is just heavenly with all the wild flowers, and where its so hot down in the Lot, the mountain air and breezes make this place much nicer in July and August.

The skiing is great and you have all the other attractions especially Aquensis, at a fraction of the cost you would pay in UK for health spa.

Thanks to its double seasonality, the area offers a wealth of tourist attractions and outdoor activities including rafting, paragliding, rambling, hiking, lakes,

national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, torrents, caves, waterfalls, mountain biking, tennis, swimming, nature walks and rambles fishing, ballooning, canoeing, trekking, snow-shoeing and skiing.

There is also cycling or rambling through the mythical passes of the Col du Aspin and Col du Tourmelet, Cirque du Gavernie, famous for the Tour du France. Our guests met and left with autograph from Lance Armstrong this year!

Walking, at whatever pace, is a shear delight, in this magical scenery and pure scented air!

The most impressive aspect of visiting mountainous areas in summer has to be the wild flowers, buzzing with insects.

Paul & Dawn's mountain property
The mountain spends so long hibernating under snow, that for the few months it is in hot sun, nature goes berserk. Meadows are covered in all colours of blooms, and laying a picnic blanket in one, and lying amongst the grasses and flowers is like being in a dream or a slightly different dimension, where colour, sound and scent are more intense.

The flowers attract the birds and the bees by the swarm, so that everything is alive with sound and movement. It's the ideal environment for spotting wildlife, like rabbits, deer, wild boar and rare mountain birds. If you get bored of that you can try some of the activities that Dawn mentioned above!
