![]() Limousin Fishing - An OverviewAn Overview of some of the regions best allround fishing spots
La Gartempe is large and deep with very strong currents. It is full of many different species of fish and trout can still be found. La Gartempe is constantly looked after and cleaned which makes it easily accessible. Towards Châteauponsac and Rancon, the river is known “the salmon river”, not to be confused with trout. Beginners fishing: With easy access, Folles-Laurière and Sagnat, are ideal lakes for learning to fish. Le Vincou at Peyrat-de-Bellac is also a good spot for beginners and has many different species of fish. Holidays: Folles Lauriere has been adapted for carp fishing and boat fishing is also allowed. The Sagnat is ideal for spotting carnivorous fish. The more experienced fisher: Around the bridge Bessereix-sur-l’Issoire, trout fishing is popular. In 1998 the lake was emptied and fish breeding was introduced, allowing the lake to gain an excellent reputation for its variety and quality of fish. Beginners fishing: During the summer many of the fish are only 2 to 3 metres under the lakes surface, especially on the banks of the Pont du Santropand. Holidays: This lake is perfect for family fishing outings. There are many small footpaths and areas that are ideal for picnics and of course fishing. The more experienced fisher: The cove of Puyperrier is known for Black bass fishing or pikeperch. For bigger fish the cove of Villebert or Friaudour is excellent. La vallée de la Vienne La Vienne is an important river, being large and deep it is full of almost all piscicultural species of fish. Visible from the roadside, it has both rapid torrents and calm waters. Choosing the right place to fish is vital on the river as the species of fish vary along the river. Enormous carp and pikeperch can be found around the coves of l’Aiguille, l’Aumonerie, Chez Roger, and Pagnac. Along the riverbanks and rocks is ideal for catching pike and along the more sandy parts, gudgeons, whereas barbel prefer stony riverbeds. Beginners fishing: It is recommended to use a light fishing rod and clear bate and to go to the sandy banks of l’Aixette, the banks of Aix-sur-Vienne’s campsite or near to the bridge of Notre Dame. Holidays: Following the left bank of the river leaving Aixe, amongst the green countryside are the mills of Tarn and of la Mie. The more experienced fisher: L’Arthonnet, Le Glanet and la Vergogne are excellent for trout fishing. Between Saint-Victurnien and Saint-Junien, the river is full of beautiful pikeperch. Le Parc Naturel Périgord-Limousin Known as “the land of water” the natural park offers many lakes that are suitable for everyone to fish in. The scenery is beautiful, the water is both calm and lively, with an abundance of fish making the park a really lovely environment to fish in. Beginners fishing: La Graine’s cove or the streams of Saint Laurent are easily accessible and full of carp. Holidays: The plan d’eau/lake of Saint-Mathieu is a lovely setting for summer fishing. As soon as the weather becomes warmer Bussière-Galant is a good place to find carp and roach. The more experienced fisher: La Tardoire is perfect for trout fishing and in deeper waters magnificent fish can be found. La Briance et la Ligoure La Ligoure and the two Briance, the “large” and “small”, are rivers that flow towards the Vienne and are home to different species of trout and gudgeons. As soon as the season starts spoon bait can be used. Amongst the calm shady waters, Pike are particularly abundant in the coves of Vigen and Solignac. La Boucheuse, L’isle and la Loue are very popular places to fish. The water being less acidic is abundant with trout. Beginners fishing: The plan d’eau of Saint-Paul and especially Saint-Germain-les-Belles are good for beginners fishing. Holidays: The rivers and lakes of Ladignac-le-long and Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche are well equipped for both trout fishing and pikeperch. The more experienced fisher: Between Saint-Priest and Saint-Jean Ligoure they are many routes to the Ligoure where trout fishing is popular. Le Taurion, la Maulde et la Vienne The Vienne and its affluent attract the sportier fisherman. With fast and often furious currents numerous small trout can be spotted. It is not the easiest of areas for fishing, indeed there is a local saying “a fish seen is not a fish caught”. Fish farming in the area provides an abundance of different species attracting tourists and fisherman. Beginners fishing: Most of the lakes in the area are suitable for beginners. Bujaleuf is a particularly good lake where the fish are never far away. Holidays: At Peyrat or La Jonchère, the plan d’eau is easily accessible and cater for all levels, even beginners. Beginners fishing: Along the flat sandy banks of Châteaucourt is a good place to learn to fish. Holidays: the quiet coves of Masgrangeas, Pierrefitte, and Auphelle provide a sheltered environment for a day out. The more experienced fisher: Due to the immense scale of the lake, boat fishing is definitely the better option. Pike are particularly abundant at Vassivière and can be found near to the riverbanks but also in the deepest waters of the lake. During the summer season it is best to avoid the busy areas. Le Pays de Limoges Regional and national fishing competitions are often hosted on the waters of la Vienne at Limoges. Fishing takes place from the riverbanks, and by the side of bridges. The experienced fisherman often catches bream and barbell with the use of thin lines measuring form 6 to 10 centimetres. Trout is also present around the bridge on the A20 motorway. Beginners fishing: The plan d’eau at Uzurat is a good place for beginners to fish. It has easy access and has been designed especially for those learning to fish. Holidays: the area is lovely for family picnics on the shady riverbanks.
