Lorient is a seaport on the Morbihan coast and the most populous city in the Morbihan department. Lorient is located on the South coast of Brittany and is located on the Blavet and Scorff rivers. The area surrounding Lorient features excellent rural cottages and as you are never far from the sea excellent coastal property, villas and gites.

Lorient is the fourth largest city in Brittany situated on both banks of the River Scorff; it is the best protected natural harbour in France, sheltered from the ocean by the island Île de Groix. It is also the second most important fishing village in France. Geographically the city lies between Quimper and Vannes. Lorient has its own airport making it easily accessible.

The seaport of Lorient is a major fishing port and the docks area at Kergroise is also home to major cargo and passenger ships. Lorient was a former base of the French Navy and many important former naval buildings remain around the quayside. There are daily trips to the old submarine base, no longer in use and set up by the Germans during the war.

Tourism is a big part of Lorient’s industry, and many choose to holiday here for the beautiful beaches. There are several large yachting marinas around the bay. The Musée de la Compagnie des Indes has relics of Lorient’s past and makes for an interesting outing. View our Lorient holiday rentals.

Available property in Lorient is mainly new-build and the property market is dominated by French buyers, the high demand for property in the area has pushed prices up in recent years. Many Parisians have second homes in Lorient.

The property just outside the town on the spectacular protected coastline is much sought after and has views out to Île de Groix. Cheaper properties can be found further inland and have pretty surroundings. Overseas buyers do choose Lorient, because there is guaranteed holiday income from Parisians.

There is a lively night life and excellent restaurants. Le Pic is an atmospheric little place with a varied menu from €19. Around place Aristide-Briand there is a good choice of bars and restaurants. Each August there is a ten day Inter-Celtic Festival which brings together all Celtic nations. Over 300,000 attend and listen to Celtic music drink cider and eat traditional meals served on the beach.
