The use of huge bits of fabric or cloth to offer shade from the sun dates back to Egyptian times. It is recorded that the Romans employed huge pieces of sail canvas to shade the Coliseum. The sail cloth in the time was rather heavy and inflexible but leant itself remarkably well towards the duty of providing shade. In much more recent times a new shade cloth fabric was developed, initially in Australia which was lighter and extra flexible, but still provided an excellent level of protection from the sun's harmful UV rays. It was as recently as the Nineties that shade cloth started to be available on a commercial scale and began to discover acceptance in households as an alternative to parasols or gazebos....
Sail Shades perform best if they are fashioned to possess a “twist”, or architectural hypar effect. This is when the fixing points, being metal posts or mounting brackets, are set up at various heights, so that the sail is then twisted so as to fit. A flat sail is more difficult to tension properly, and in times of significant rain storm can catch and hold water for a long time, putting excessive load on the attachment points. Additionally, from an aesthetic viewpoint, they look less exciting. We suggest you set up your connection points with diagonally opposite higher and lower points, to prevent these difficulties and create a visually attractive Sail shade structure
