Lot and Quercy Life Bonjour! Welcome to September in the Lot and Quercy. What an absolutely exhausting, exhilarating month August has been. The weather has been predictably glorious and it rained only just in time to give the vines a much-needed drink last week. Of course August here means holidays for all and holidays mean FETES! There are private parties, which nevertheless are always held outside and usually have thirty or forty people in attendance, often a barbecue and usually of the make-do variety. The one we attended a couple of days ago was held on a hilltop with the guests, mainly the rural French, gathered round a large fire and a Heath Robinson contraption roasting a whole sheep. It was delicious too. There are little village fetes where everybody brings a platter of something gorgeous - the standard is frighteningly high - and the Mairie stumps up for the bread and wine. There are the huge town banquets where caterers and professional musicians provide everything and all you have to do is book well in advance and enjoy the evening. There are the outstanding firework displays. Puy L'Eveque, a medieval village on the banks of the Lot, has the most spectacular I've ever seen. Then at the very end of the month the shutters close on the holiday homes, the tourists are suddenly dramatically reduced, the markets are quieter and the produce begins to change from the peaches, peppers and salads of high summer to stunning pumpkins, mushrooms and sticky figs, fresh coco and borlotti beans, armfuls of glorious chard and strings of garlic and chillies. Everybody looks forward to the hot, sunshiny days of September, just as lovely as July and August - but a little more peaceful!
