With many airlines flying into the South of France, Luberon can be easily reached. The nearest airport is Avignon. With a good supply of delightful farmhouses and villas, and a good rental potential both summer and winter, the Luberon area is very popular with overseas home buyers.

Luberon guide

Luberon has rolling hills, hidden valleys and lovely colourful countryside, including Orchards full of blood red cherries, ripe yellow melons, olives and other crops. Luberon is known for its vibrant lavender fields, which produce both honey and fragrance oils.

The flavours and scents of the region subtly transform with the seasons, ensuring Luberon is delightful all year around. Such beautiful countryside, greatly inspired the artwork of both Van Goth and Cezanne.

The area is characterised by a number of stunning, perched hill-top villages, which date back over 1000 years and were built upon hill tops in order to spot intruders. Some of the most picturesque include Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Lacoste and Menerbes.

Each town and village in Luberon is known for its market and there are markets each day. In some towns such as Velleron, there is an evening market and visitors can purchase produce picked that day.

Apt and Cavallion are Luberon’s main towns. Apt lies in the heart of this natural reserve, among rustling olive groves, and is an ancient town with ramparts, a clocktower and a stunning cathedral. The town is known locally for its crystallised fruit truffles.

Cavallion is a good base to get to other towns from, including Aix-en-Provence and Avignon. Renowned for its fabulous market and tasty ripe melons, Cavallion has both a Melon Museum and hosts a Melon Fête each July! The town is also admired for its rich cultural heritage: it has an arch built by the Romans in 1AD, beautiful synagogue and pretty streets and squares.

Property in the region is very popular, particularly around Apt and this has kept prices high, though houses are still cheaper than on the coast. The types of properties available include traditional blue shuttered farmhouses and villas in picturesque villages; in the main towns including Apt and Cavaillon, which are still never far from the country, town houses and apartments make great homes.
