Niort, in the department of Deux- Sèvres in Poitou-Charentes, lies on the southern edge of the Marais Poitévin region which offers a natural environment that is unique in France and often compared to Venice or Amsterdam: this area is extensively crossed by canals and rivers, and in many parts is best explored by boat - usually 'barques', the flat-bottomed boats are used.Niort is ideally located because it is at a reasonable distance from Nantes, La Rochelle, Poitier, and Angouleme, wherever you decide to go around Niort, you will never be over 1 hour away from an international airport.

From the town centre right up to the start of the Marais Poitevin, the man-made embankments of the Sèvre offer a corridor of green and pleasant land ideal for walking, fishing and cross country cycling. This stretch has been named the « Coulée Verte ».
