The town is situated on top of a hill which overlooks the River Pau. Pau has its own airport, but is also accessible if flying to Biarritz airport.The town has magnificent medieval and renaissance buildings, the most significant being the 14th century Château, where one can see the apartments of Napoleon III. Pau also has beautiful public parks ideal for a lazy picnic. The landscape surrounding Pau is both beautiful and dramatic with mountains, deep forests and lakes. The mild Mediterranean climate makes it a popular place for winter holidays too – particularly sporting such as golf and horse riding. There is plenty to do in the town and nearby especially for nature lovers: a famous walk along the Boulevard des Pyrénées, from the Chateau de Pau to the Royal Beaumont Park – it has spectacular views of the Pyrénées. Pau provides a good base for skiers. The historic city of Lourdes is close enough to visit, as is Spain. The town is proud of its Basque heritage which is reflected in the regional dishes available at many of the restaurants such as grilled meats. The town of Pau was the location for the first ever Grand Prix in 1901, the circuit is of course still used today and racing days bring even more visitors to this enchanting town.
