![]() English language church services in the VendeeChristian fellowship for the expat community
"The move forced us to consider how our spiritual needs here in France could be met," said the former teacher. The nearest church was in Poitou-Charentes, a 250 kilometre round trip - too far away to feel truly involved in a permanent Christian fellowship. The Davies` then mailed letters throughout the Vendée to find out if there were other English speakers in the area who shared their need. As a former Lay Reader in the Church in Wales, Brian conducted his first service for a group of 30 with a Harvest Thanksgiving in a local Roman Catholic Church. This was the basis of what would become the Anglican Church of All Saints, Vendée. A call to ordained ministry which had lain dormant in Brian re-surfaced in a powerful manner, and he and Pam felt that this should be tested. Selected as a candidate for study at the age of 66, Brian went to an Oxford theological College and was made a Deacon in 2004, and Ordained Priest in 2005, serving initially as a Curate in the Anglican Chaplaincy of Poitou-Charentes.
In early 2007, Brian was invited to become the Priest-in-Charge of the newly created Pastoral Area of All Saints, Vendée, within the Diocese in Europe. Pam and Brian came to the Vendée from Wales, where Brian had been the Head of Department for Religious Education in a large rural comprehensive school. Uganda He also served a Development programme in an Anglican Diocese in Uganda, following the fall of Idi Amin, working with a project to provide safe clean drinking water for children in rural communities there. Services are currently held on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at Puy de Serre where there is a growing and thriving congregation, and on the third Sunday at La Chapelle Achard. These are usually services of Holy Communion, with Morning Prayer at Puy de Serre on the fourth Sunday alternatively. There are Homegroups meeting regularly, and a developing Pastoral care programme, to meet the many needs in a rural environment. "I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to become ordained, but in a real sense there was an inevitability about it, and I feel that I have been chosen, rather than having made a choice. "It`s a profoundly humbling experience", said Brian. Revd.
