![]() Almost 13,000 British nationals live in Poitou-Charentes The British represent nearly a third of all foreigners living in Poitou-Charentes according to a recent report by the French National Institute of Statistics (INSEE)* conducted from tax d’habitation surveys. Most have arrived in the last 20 years and settled mainly in rural areas. With its sunny climate, close proximity to the UK and beautiful countryside from coastline to rolling green pastures, it is no surprise that over 7,000 second homes in Poitou-Charentes are owned by UK residents. Statistics suggest that 13,000 British nationals reside permanently in the region which comes second only to Ile-de-France. Owning the most second homes in Poitou-Charentes, they are followed by the Dutch who own 700 second homes. With 600 second homes each, the Germans and Belgians follow. In fact across France, the British represent one third of foreign second home owners, far more than the Italians, Germans and Belgians. Due to its close proximity to the sea the Charente-Maritime is popular with the British who own 2,020 homes there. The Charente has slightly more British home owners at 2,370. The other departments in Poitou-Charentes are also very popular – Deux-Sèvres has 1,550 British home owners and the Vienne has 1,130. Nevertheless, the Alpes-Maritimes, Savoie and the Dordogne are the most attractive departments to the British. Some of the homes owned by the British are for permanent residence. According to the tax records, 10% of the British expats who arrived in France in the last 5 years live in Poitou-Charentes, ahead of the Midi-Pyrénées and Aquitaine, but behind the Ile-de-France with 16% of British owned homes and 20,000 British residents. Since the millennium, the British make up 90% of new owners of second homes in Poitou-Charentes, including those residing abroad. Although still very low, the Irish have showed the largest increase in second home owners in the region in the years since 2000. In comparison, the British make up only 60% of new owners in France; the remaining 40% consist of people from Belgium, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain. Interestingly, the British own the greatest number of second homes in France yet over half have been living in the region for less than 5 years and almost all have arrived within the last 20 years. They are predominantly retired residents with 55% of them being between 50 and 74 years of age. However, nearly 1,800 young people under 15 years have been identified. Having arrived with their parents they are schooled in Poitou-Charentes, and often in small primary schools in rural communities. Indeed, the vast majority (85%) of the British expats in this region have settled in rural areas. The attraction of the Poitou-Charentes to the British could continue in the coming years, if not constrained by the global economic slowdown and its impact on the UK economy. Many UK second home owners or indeed expats in France have come and gone over the years which is in contrast to other nationalities, such as the Portuguese, Algerians and Morroccans, who stay for longer in the region. * All information and statistics were sourced from www.insee.fr Living Home Page Looking for a property in France?
