Quimper guide
Quimper the oldest Breton City and the remains of its original fortifications and ramparts can still be seen. The city is in the department of Finistère and has a fantastic atmosphere and Breton Charm. The city has a tradition of pottery making which it has done since 17th century. The nearest airport is Brest.The centre of Quimper has a Festival de Cornouaille started in 1923, jamboree of Breton music, costumes, theatre and dance held at the end of each July and during the Winter a music festival brings a great variety of live music to the city.
Attractions worth a visit include the enormous Cathédrale St Corentin, it is the oldest Gothic Cathedral in Brittany. Musée Départmental Breton has a fine collection which starts with Bronze Age objects and culminates with a remarkable mix of Breton oddments and art work. Musée des Beaux Arts has an assortment of arts from 18th and 19th Century paintings to vibrant murels of Breton scenes.
Finistère has some of the cheaper properties in Brittany. Renovation projects are still available and Quimper is an ideal location if seeking a property with rental potential.
Quimper has a number of cafés and bars and is a young and vibrant city. The city’s eating establishments boast some of the best crepes and cider in Brittany. Le Brasserie de l’Epée, a lovely Art Nouveau brasserie facing the river, serves a menu to suit all price ranges. L’Ambroisie, an upmarket French restaurant is a short climb north from the cathedral and serves lots of good seafood and meat dishes.
