St Malo guideThe historic walled city of St Malo, was originally a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance and is situated on the North East corner of Brittany. Modern St Malo traces its origins to a monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by Saints Aaron and Brendan. It became notorious as the home of government employed pirates.Having been bombed at the end of world war two, the city was devastated and its 17th and 18th century buildings have since been rebuilt stone by stone. The city has retained its strong sense of identity, and today is rich in Breton culture and fine food. St Malo is in fact the most visited place in Brittany and with its vast clean beaches, charming port, amazing ramparts created in the 14th century and lively town centre it is a great place to holiday or buy property.
