Tarbes guideTarbes is situated on the edge of the Pyrénées National Park and provide magnificent backdrop. Both the Atlantic Coast and Spain are a short drive away. The nearest airports are Pau and Lourdes, but Tarbes is easily accessed if flying to Toulouse.Tarbes has an attractive town centre and an intriguing historic past as a centre of power in Roman times. Tarbes is known for its tarbais breed of horses and the National Stud is worth visiting to see these amazing animals. The town is proud of its tradition of equestrian – which Napoleon begun when he founded an academy to train his soldiers the art of horse riding. In Tarbes the sun always seems to be shining because the climate is very warm. In the summer visitors can see the town’s attractions by horse and carriage. In the nearby Pyrénées a range of activities can be enjoyed including rock climbing, caving, water sports, paragliding, swimming, fishing and picturesque walking.
