Val-d'Isère is most recognisable by its charming "chalet" architecture. Along with nearby Tignes the area forms part of the "l'Espace Killy", the self-titled "Most Beautiful Ski Area in the World." Beauty aside, the combined space is one of the largest ski areas in the world.

Val d’Isére guide

Val d’Isére, in the Rhône-Alpes region of Eastern France, is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful ski areas in the world. Unlike the many purpose built ski resorts, Val d’Isére’s original settlement dates back to before Christianity. Today the town is admired for its charming “chalet” architecture. Val d’Isére forms with Tignes, part of L’Espace Killy, a vast skiing area of high altitude mountain terrain. The nearest airport to the resort is Chambery.

When on holiday in Val d’Isére, skiers are spoilt for choice of ski runs, and with its vast areas of off piste skiing, it is one of the world’s top resorts. It is no surprise that Val d’Isère has been chosen to host the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. In the summer the mountains provide a beautiful backdrop for walkers and the Pissaillas Glacier offers summer skiing. View the latest Val d’Isére ski holiday rentals.

With its enchanting 11th century church, the town’s main street is a sought after area for property buyers. The street has been remodelled in recent years with old style stone buildings. To many, the main attraction of buying a property in Val d’Isere as opposed to another resort, is the fact that it is an authentic unspoilt French village nestling in the heart of great skiing mountains.

Après-ski there is plenty to do, many English visitors go to Dick’s Tea Bar, its music ranges from jazz to disco. La Fruitière restaurant is furnished to the style of a traditional alpine milking parlour; it makes for an atmospheric meal. Val d’Isére Restaurant has won awards, and with its romantic setting and great food and wine selection it is no surprise.
