The area
With endless superb beaches, picturesque hinterland and a warm reliable climate year round the Languedoc region is a much sought after holiday destination which benefits from excellent transport links. In addition to a wealth of beach activities, walking and cycling, Port Leucate is also close to Font Romeu and a number of excellent ski resorts in the Pyrenees which are quieter and less expensive than the Alps. The old village of Leucate is a mile or so inland. A picturesque small community with narrow streets and pretty squares it is dominated by a fortified castle well worth a visit for the stunning views across the Corbieres range and Mont Canigou. In the autumn a number of wine festivals take place in the local Chateaux with wine tasting opportunities.
