![]() Skiing in the Ariege PyreneesGuide to Ax 3 Domaines, Mont d'Olmes and Mijanes-Donezan Ski StationsIf you're planning a winter break in the Aude and are flying into Carcassonne, you may be surprised to find that you don't have to go as far as the Pyrenees-Orientales to go skiing. Apart from its very own Audois ski station at Camurac, the south-western egde of the Aude department is just a few kilometres away from the best ski slopes in the Ariege department: Ax 3 Domaines, Les Monts d'Olmes and Mijanθs. Here's what you need to know about them:AX 3 DOMAINES WHY GO THERE? There are 75km of ski runs here spread over three ski domains - Bonascre, Saquet and Campels - all of which are very easily accessed either through the Col du Teil and Camurac or via the N20 motorway south of Toulouse and Foix - alternatively you can take the cable car direct from the centre of Ax-les-Termes (near the train station) up to the slopes. The town of Ax-les-Thermes is also famous for its thermal springs - very useful for relaxing aching muscles! Situated in the heart of Cathar country the slopes here are ideal for families and particularly good for beginners, with a good variety of pistes a ski school and snowboarding, there's something for everyone here! The Mijanes-Donezan ski station is set above a series of seven interconnected picturesque villages, deep in the alpine forests of the Pyrenees. Whilst the station is relatively small it is perfectly formed, with facilities for cross-country and snowboarding as well as skiing. It is less busy than other stations and is very much loved and enjoyed by local families. PISTES: 1 black 2 red 4 blue 3 green CROSS-COUNTRY/ SNOW-SHOEING/ SNOWBOARDING: There are cross-country and snowshoeing tracks and a snowpark for snowboarding.
