![]() Watching UK TV in the LanguedocSatellite TV installation in the languedoc from SkyinFrance and FrenchEntreeSkyinFrance are the biggest provider and installer of Sky and Free-to-Air satellite equipment across the Languedoc Roussillon. For more information visit the Sky in France website or read on. It’s no secret why so many of us want to move to France – a better standard of life, the food and the weather are three of the most common reasons given for moving away from the UK. However there will always be a few things we’ll miss about good old blighty and for most of us TV will be at the top of that list. Even if you speak fluent French and want to watch French TV there can’t be many of us who won’t want to catch up on our favourite UK news, sport and entertainment programmes. So what do you need to bring your beloved UK TV into your new French home? FrenchEntree spoke to Richard at SkyinFrance.com the biggest provider and installer of Sky and Free-to-Air satellite equipment to English speaking residents in France to get some definitive answers. FrenchEntree – Starting with the basics, what equipment am I going to need to receive UK programmes? Richard – Firstly you will need a Zone 2 56 cm black mesh dish. Also the quality of reception will depend on how well the dish is fitted. There’s no point in fitting a dish unless it is secure and permanent. Secondly you’ll need a Digital Satellite Receiver with a remote control. I would recommend a new Sky Digibox as this will allow you the greatest flexibility when it comes to which channels you will be able to watch. FrenchEntree – Why is that? Richard – Well with any standard Digital Satellite Receiver and dish you will be able to pick up BBC & ITV television and radio channels because the BBC & ITV transmissions are no longer encrypted by SKY. In other words they are 'Free-to-Air'. However it is also possible to receive Channel 4 and 5 and Sky 3 which are ‘Free to View’ but require a viewing card. A Sky digibox has a slot for this card which many other receivers do not. And of course if you want to subscribe to any of the Sky channels for sports or movies etc you will need a Sky digibox. FrenchEntree - How much is a subscription to Sky? Richard - Sky charge a monthly subscription for a minimum contract of 12 months. The price depends on the 'package' of channels that you choose. (If you do not renew at the end of the 12 month period the Sky card automatically becomes a Free-to-View card!) Sky subscriptions currently go from £15 to £43 a month.(1/5/07) FrenchEntree – Do you still need to provide Sky with a UK address in order to subscribe with them? Richard - No,our subscription system does not require you to provide a UK address. FrenchEntree – What about the TV itself? Richard – You can use any UK or European television set as long as it is PAL compliant (the standard UK system). Most modern televisions, and nearly all French ones, are capable of PAL, but the advantage of a French set is that it can also accept SECAM so you would be able to receive the standard French terrestrial channels through an aerial. Please check before you buy a TV that it is capable of PAL (UK & most of Europe) and SECAM (fairly unique to France). FrenchEntree – There’s a big buzz at the moment surrounding HD or High Definition TV can you tell us more about it and whether we can receive it in France yet? Richard - High Definition offers picture
FrenchEntree – Finally in terms of installation how long will I have to wait and what can I expect to pay? Richard - We are usually booked up to one month in advance but can normally fit instalations within 2 weeks of receiving an order and payments vary according to requirements starting from as little as 250 euros.
