Vandalism on Rail Tracks near Narbonne
A TGV train in the Languedoc-Roussillon fell victim to yet another act of vandalism on 9th November when it hit two concrete slabs which had been placed across the tracks at Coursan near Narbonne. Fortunately there were no injuries following the collision, but the front of the train was damaged and the service was delayed by 1 hour. The incident follows and apparent campaign of vandalism against the SNCF: over the past few weeks there have been several other similar instances of concrete slabs placed across the tracks or iron rods, of the kind normally used to reinforce concrete, on the overhead cables at different locations across France. These acts of vandalism have caused widespread delays to the network affecting around 160 train services, including TGV and Eurostar services, across France. Investigations continue. The vandalism has also provoked further tension between government ministers and SNCF labour unions who have also been staging ongoing strikes against proposed retirement reforms. The SNCF rail authority described the vandalism as a "co-ordinated sabotage campaign" but stopped short at blaming strikers.

Teachers Strike across Region
Teachers across the Languedoc-Roussillon joined a national strike across France on 20th November to protest against plans to cut thousands of jobs in the education system, but the government vowed to press on with reforms it says are needed to cut costs. The strike reopened controversy over a recent measure that obliges local authorities to provide alternative care arrangements for children by school assistants or other staff, with mayors in many places saying they were unable to comply. Half of primary school teachers and about 20 per cent of secondary school teachers took part in the strike, the Education Ministry estimated, while the main unions put the figures at 50 per cent in primary schools and 69 per cent in secondary schools. More than 735,000 teachers work in French state schools but they have long complained that government cuts have added to their workload and made classrooms more difficult to manage. As part of a wider drive to trim the French public service, some 13,500 education jobs are due to disappear next year. The government is also planning a series of time tabling and organisational changes which the government claims will improve performance and better prepare pupils for final baccalaureate examinations. But unions say the government's main aim is to cut costs at the expense of teachers and pupils.

Gendarmes Arrest Fugitive After 17 Years
A man has been arrested having successfully hidden from the police for 17 years. The arrest follows a year long investigation into a cocaine trafficking ring by the Montpellier gendarmerie and the territorial brigade of Palavas. During the twelve months of surveillance and information gathering, agents picked up the trace of a known fugitive who had been on the run for 17 years. The suspect, currently residing in Vιnissieux in the Rhone region under a false name, had been tried in absentia for two counts of armed robbery in 1991 and 1992 and is now awaiting court hearings for his involvement in the Herault drug trafficking case.

Two Men Killed in Hunting Accidents
Over the weekend of the 8th November, two men were fatally wounded in two separate hunting accidents in the region, one at La Salvetat-sur-Agout in the Herault and the other at Bessθges in the Gard. In both incidents it seems that the people responsible for firing the fatal shots thought that they had seen boars; both shooters are said to be in a profound state of shock and will have to face criminal charges in due course.
