This very attractive town is dominated by the well-conserved 15th-century castle. The whole town has a medieval feel to it, with some little cobbled streets and stone archways, and most of the houses are built of local stone. There is a very small weekly market.

Renovation projects in the town centre or in the country start from around 30 000€. For this price, you can buy a house where the structure is sound, but the interior will need complete renovation, and you will need to budget in addition for central heating, rewiring and new windows and doors.

Lassay ChateauTourist attractions
Lassay-les-Châteaux is a “Petite Cité de Caractère”, a name given to small towns of particular architectural or historical interest. There are in fact three castles, the best preserved of which is situated in the town itself. The other two, Bois-Thibault and Bois-Frou, are outside the town and rather more in ruins! The town is also well-known for the fact that Victor Hugo stayed here – the story goes that he stayed at an inn (now called the Pub à Victor) because he was refused entry to the Château, where he was mistaken for a tramp. The town also has a former convent, a rose garden and a medieval herb garden.

The town has a range of food shops, newsagents and other small shops for everyday items, but for clothing, shoes and consumer goods you’ll need to head for Mayenne, 12 miles away, or further afield.

Local transport The “Pégase” network runs buses between Lassay-les-Châteaux and Mayenne, and on to Laval. The services run in the morning and evening, and fares are very reasonable.
The nearest train stations are in Laval and Alençon, both 30 miles away.
