Five years ago two Englishmen packed off for SW France to pursue their dream of setting up a ‘boutique guest house’ near Albi in the Tarn. Orlando Murrin was the Editor BBC Good Food magazine and Peter Steggall’s was in financial services. FrenchEntree visited Orlando to find out about their journey and the launch of a new book "A Table in the Tarn", to be published by Harper Collins in April 2008
The trial of Robert Lund began on Monday 16th October, almost three years after he was arrested and eight years after his wife, Lancashire-born Evelyn, died. Both lived on a farm near Rayssac (Realmont - Tarn). It took place at the “Cour d’Assise” of Albi located on place Lapérouse. It was open to public and lasted 5 days. This is the complete account of the trial.
I never could have imagined that as I stood in command of more than 60 fireman on the deck of a burning ship just outside the Blackwater Estuary in Essex that some twenty years later I would be opening an English book & food shop in a small market town in the Aveyron.
My reasons for coming to France? Less stress, not working 9-5, better schooling for the children, better weather, having more time with the family, a bigger house, smaller mortgage, being closer to nature to name but a few. However it does not always turn out exactly how you imagined it!
When I met Julia about six years ago, she told me about her long cherished dream of owning and running a Bed and Breakfast in France.
A 5-part documentary was shown on Arte in 2006. It was about 10 British families in the Gaillac area of the Tarn. For 9 months, Nick Quinn, followed the day-to-day life of British expatriates of different age groups and social classes. Even if there are disappointments and they don’t live the French dream as they imagined it, these families are happy here and would not go back to Britain.
This month FrenchEntrée Tarn & Aveyron meets British actor Donald Douglas, living in the Tarn, who has appeared in films and many well known television shows including EastEnders, Kavanagh QC, Casualty, Monarch of the Glen and more recently the TV drama Losing It. His film appearances include A Bridge Too Far and the role of Admiral Darcy in the Bridget Jones's Diary movies.

If you've been following my series about the closing of the old Combarel hospital in Rodez, you may be wondering what the new hospital looks like. I may still have been wondering myself if my daughter hadn't had a surprise appendectomy performed there in early January.
It is de bon ton for newcomers to Rodez, especially those arriving from big cities, to relentlessly criticize the lack of cultural offerings in the area. "There's nothing to do," they complain. "There's just no culture."What do I say to these people? "YOU ARE WRONG!"
...at least it was fooling around, in a way. The French Foreign Legion was in Rodez last week, carrying out a military exercise entitled "Etex 2007." Their highly visible presence caused consternation to some, and intrigued many.

He turned up exactly when he said he would. Not a bad start for a petty government official. I say government official, but I am not really sure who he was. I know who he works for - one of the many organisations that I send cheques to on an all-too-regular basis.

If there is one thing that you learn to do when you start a business in France, it is to wait, and then some. I sometimes feel like the young apprentice who is sent down to the builders' merchant to ask for a long weight (Wait! Ha Ha.)
