Vive La Renovation
Trevor Morris runs a small renovation business, specialising in barn conversions and the general overhaul of the ageing French housing stock in south west France. Most of his clients are English in the Tarn, Aveyron and Tarn-et-Garonne departments in Midi-Pyrenees. He is helped in his endeavours by the lovely Sue; the accident prone Guillaume; Darryn the brain-damaged electrician; Pat the melancholy plumber; Donkey-Barn Patrick, and any client that can be roped in to help with the projects. In his spare time, he writes a weekly column for the Dorset Echo newspaper and FrenchEntree, and in the time that is left, he works on his own property and dedicates himself to his wife, cats and goldfish. Trevor will cover on this site the following; Keep up to date with latest goings on, fascinating characters and bizarre situations in the south west France. JUST at the time when the world should have been focusing on Sarkozy's attempts to reform a bankrupt and outdated economy into a shining example for the whole of the Western world, the world has become distracted.
If you are going to choose to live in a foreign country you should really try to take advantage of all that the country has to offer. If you live in France it is churlish not to eat a bit of cheese, drink the odd glass of vino, and partake in one of the main reasons why France rates as one of the most visited tourist destinations. It is not just because people want to have their photo taken next to the Eiffel tower, it is popular because the country is absolutely full to bursting with picturesque villages.
One picture postcard village found just to the north of us in the Lot valley is called Saint-Cirq Lapopie. It is one of the many, so called bastide towns. One of the now ruined castles offers breathtaking views and provokes a feeling of awe for the people of the 13th century who struggled to build it.
This week’s article was supposed to be a heart warming, uplifting, feel good article about two brave people battling against physical difficulties, and rescuing a building from imminent catastrophe to a new lease of life. In many ways it was. From the first day when we stripped off what was left of the old roof, things were looking good.

One of the most important jobs when renovating a traditional stone property is one that is not too difficult to get right, but one that is all too easy to get horribly wrong. It is the job that gives the first impression of your property and makes people either sigh with delight or gasp and go running for the hills. It is the external pointing. A fairly major renovation task, but one that is not out of the reach of the competent DIY enthusiast.
