The Tarn, department 81, has been a favorite with British buyers in the south west of France for many years. Tarn is a prosperous and lively area that possesses a wealth of stunning towns and medieval villages, many of them classified as the most beautiful of France. From retired couples to young families, they invest in everything from vineyard chateaux to run-down cottages. House-hunters in France have a new flight of fancy by buying and restoring Pigeonniers. Pigeon towers can be the most elegant of farm buildings, often more appealing than the houses to which they belong. Wide interest is now taken in the pigeon houses themselves despite the fact that they were in reality only part of farming properties.

The average price of an old house in the Tarn was €150,000. Medium-sized village properties and stone farms with outbuildings and land can be found for around €250,000 while larger renovated country houses start at €320,000. Tarn is historically a wealthy area, property prices have soared since 2000 and are well above the national average. But the market is slowing down.
In Albi only the price of the flats in the historic centre increased in 2006(+5% to 10%) due to the renovation around the Cathedral and covered market. The general price stagnation announced in summer 2005 took place in Albi. The price of the new flats reached a ceiling, this is probably due to the large number of new developments in the past few years.
In obtaining the Fondation du Patrimoines Label, a private Tarn homeowner owning real estate that is of particular cultural significance but which is not protected or listed as a historical monument, is elegible for tax deduction when carrying out maintenance or restoration.
