Over the last year or so, there seems to have been a real outbreak on here of people whose location is given as somewhere in France, yet who make it clear through their postings that they actually aren’t full-time residents.

    Any particular reason?

I spend five months per year at my French house, so why should I not take part in this forum?

Or would you like to limit membership to the Dordogneshire crowd?

I really do not know where you are “coming from” janes.

Where a person/family live whether in France/UK or otherwise, has nothing to do with anyone else.

Oh come now! There has been a real shortage of grumpy posting of late so any attempt to stir up a bit of grumbling must be applauded. Where have all the really contraversial topics gone?

Possibly because where they live in France is more relevant to their postings on this forum than where they live in the UK, or anywhere else.

It could equally be that when they first started posting on the forum they lived in France, now they don’t but they haven’t bothered to change their location details.

Whatever the reason, just because somebody isn’t a full time resident in France doesn’t mean that they don’t live in France. The only property I now “own” is in France but this year I have found myself spending less time in France than elsewhere in Europe. Does this mean in your eyes I am now only pretending to live in France?

OK, I’ll make it a bit clearer for those who are possibly convinced I’m looking for a fight, or perhaps it’s them that’s looking for one?

There is an exhortation by the moderators, writ large at the bottom of their posts, for members to put their location. Many people choose not to comply at all. Some choose to comply by putting their location as their department, others are more precise and put their town, or village. It’s helpful, and useful when answering posts requesting information which can only really be given IF you have a rough fix on where someone is living.

There have been many (yes, many) situations where people have become confused because it appears from someone’s “location” (freely given, no pressure) that they are living in, and maybe (heaven forfend, it’s supposed to be a francophile forum) writing from/about France, when in fact they aren’t there at all. Some, and it’s here that I’m a little curious, appear quite anxious to give the impression that they live in France, yet make comments which indicate that in fact they don’t..at least not full-time.

I’m merely curious as to why.

It appears from the responses to this thread to date that, for some at least, this is a touchy subject. Personally, I’m not “grumpy” about it, nor am I expecting people to respond with their full address and postcode. As someone has said…where someone lives is nothing to do with anyone else, just like their political beliefs or religious convictions are nothing to do with anyone else, yet that hasn’t stopped both those issues being discussed frequently on this very forum.

Is there some perceived “shame” attached to NOT living in France?

As for Tonnere…what a bizarre comment. I am not sure how you extrapolated from my post that I wish to “limit” anyone to anything. However, I hope I’ve made the reason for my question a bit clearer.

In fact, as a more general comment…why do I need a reason, or indeed an ulterior motive, for asking the original question in the first place? If so, then THAT, rather than the question itself, is an innovation for this forum

Don’t lose any sleep over it Janes. I understood what you were trying to say and must say that I’m pretty stunned by the reaction to your post.

I’m sure that you are not trying to pick a fight Janes (perish the thought) but it was pretty emotive language that you used, that somehow unless you are a full time resident in France you are only pretending to live there.

Everyone’s personal circumstances are different, and we can’t all be as clearcut with our location details as the moderators may want. Our house is in the Charente Maritime, my partner lives there permanantly and I call it home despite the fact that I spend large chunks of time away from it. When I am in France I am part of a community, I know the neighbours, they know me. It is home. If somebody asks me where I live of course I say France, because I don’t live anywhere else, I only exist.

I’m not, that kind of aggressive response has become par for the course on here.

Yes, but….you don’t have any location mentioned on your profile, Redparasol, so you’re not pretending to live anywhere…..

    Once more, for luck:

I’m at a loss as to how this translates into “unless you are a full-time resident in France, you are only pretending to live there”. What I’m saying is that people – those who DO choose to put their location in their profile – yet choose to mention only their French location when they aren’t living in France all the time, seem (to me) to be “pretending” to live in France.

If you were to examine my location in my profile, you might notice that YOUR interpretation puts me firmly in the “pretending to live in France” club. So, worst-case scenario, I’m not accusing anyone of something I’m not doing myself!!!!!!:lol::lol:
