Buying Hot Spots – Meursault, Côte-d’Or, Burgundy

First and foremost, Meursault is renowned for its superior white wine. An appellation in the Côte-d’Or département of Burgundy, specifically part of the Côte de Beaune’s prolific ‘golden triangle’, its famous vin blanc is typically green-gold in colour, silky on the tongue and tastes oaky and sweet. As you would imagine, the town is quite the picture, surrounded by rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see – but you might want to think again if you’re looking for a vignoble to claim as your own. It’s notoriously difficult, if not impossible, for foreign buyers to purchase vineyards here and you’d be better off hunting in Bordeaux and the south.

Don’t abandon all hope, though… This corner of la Belle France is awash with attractive properties, including traditional farmhouses and cottages,  châteaux and plots of land for building. You might pay a pretty penny – demand from buyers is high and pricing reflects that – but the property market in Burgundy is buoyant and properties tend to hold their value well, with something to suit every budget. The region is increasingly popular with  second-home buyers and permanent movers, and whilst there’s no denying the lure of the grape, there are plenty of good reasons to put down roots here long-term.

For starters, you’ll have access to all the necessary amenities: a supermarket, specialist grocery store, post office, bakeries, restaurants and clothes shops. There’s even a luxury spa open to residents and visitors alike (essential after a busy day of househunting, if you ask us). When you want to travel further afield, the Meursault-Blagny hiking trail offers a beautiful 7km walk through the area’s fields and vineyards, and the university city of Dijon – Burgundy’s vibrant capital, with its gorgeous halftimbered buildings – is under an hour’s drive away. Close by there’s also the fascinating Hospices de Beaune, one of France’s most prestigious historic monuments. A former almshouse from the 15th century and now a museum, its incredible patterned roof is the first thing you’ll notice (and snap!), but its Gothic chapel and collection of pewter and earthenware are also well worth a peek.

Of course, Meursault itself will always be a oenophile’s paradise, and there are few better ways to while away the hours than guided tours and tastings at the Château de Meursault and other winemaking estates.
