MAUBOURGUET

Hautes-Pyrénées, Occitanie

Maubourguet is close to the Spanish border in the historical province of Gascony. Once you leave behind this region’s major settlements, from Auch to Bordeaux, you’ll enter its green heart, which is the rural setting for this charming market town.

Boasting a rich heritage, Maubourguet has several claims to the past. A Benedictine priory was built here in the 11th century – traces of which can still be seen in the Romanesque Église Saint-Martin – and later fortified by the English during the 14th century. It’s the perfect base from which to visit the nearby historic towns of Lourdes and Carcassonne.

As for property, the buildings in Maubourguet come in all shapes and sizes: the traditional half-timbered house inspired by medieval settlers, usually very affordable at around €300,000; the maisons de maître, which started to appear with the rise of the middle class in the 18th century and are usually priced at around €500,000; and the Gers Chartreuse, a luxury stone home that’s typically the most expensive.

However, properties in the Hautes-Pyrénées area are often cheaper than those of surrounding regions like Languedoc and Gers, so it’s perfect for investment. Although the picturesque architecture in Maubourguet harks back to a bygone era, the town has all the facilities necessary to make modern life comfortable here – from banks and schools, to supermarkets and shops.

Like most French towns, Maubourguet holds a weekly market – here it takes place every Tuesday morning – so there’s easy, regular access to fresh local produce. In addition, high-quality restaurants are plentiful, meaning there’s always lots of choice for dining out.

The pace of life is very relaxed here and the climate is mild. In spring, temperatures average about 7°C, rising to around 21°C during the summer months, making it comfortable for day-trips.

Getting around is easy, too, with good transport links in the region. It has five airports providing direct links to Britain, plus the TGV connects Paris and Tarbes, which is 30 minutes away by car.
