A guide to childcare in the Limousin

Free Nursery places in the Limousin as in much of France are over subscribed. As a result priority is given to children who are 3 years of age or over.

If your child is younger it is stil worth enquiring at your local Mairie, at the very least you will learn when the following years registrations begin. There are, however, a number of excellent nurseries (“garderies”) across the region, many of which are state subsidised.

In order to register your child for a place, it is necessary to phone and/or visit the Director/Directrice. You’ll be asked for your child’s birth certificate, health book and details of their doctor.

France is quite strict in ensuring that the child is up to date with all vaccinations before he/she can take up a place at the garderie, and you may find that you’ll have to organise a doctors appointment to get up to date before your child can start. For example the French require that all children have the BCG vaccination which is not required in the UK until between the ages of 10 and 14.

The nursery we visited was staffed by extremely nice ladies and seemed to have a very professional and welcoming atmosphere, and more importantly our daughter loved it. Many nurseries’ charges will be means tested, but some will charge a flat rate per hour, which ever way it is not expensive- with care costing no more than around €1.40 an hour.
