This short guide aims to compliment all the good work that the Property Team at FrenchEntrée give to make your property search a great success.
With most homes now having 6 internet connected devices good broadband is seen as an essential service rather than good to have. In fact any new customer only wanting a line with no broadband is a rarity! This represents a huge change from when UKTelecom first started helping customers in France 15 years ago. Then we just sold low cost calls and dial-up internet access!
Today’s customers want fast broadband and great customer service. After all there is no point in having a cheap service if help when things fail is hard to come by. We understand how central the service is to almost everyone. From banking and shopping to Skyping and Facetime a reliable service backed up by great customer care is essential. For those who find broadband essential we have produced this guide that will help you work with French Entrée’s Property Team to ensure you don’t find yourself in a broadband ‘black hole’.
Here are the most useful web sites that will help you set up the best services for you. There are many more of course and there are others that we have access to as part of the services we offer.
Search Before You Buy
Use this site to find out what the general broadband speed is in any town or commune where you are searching for a property. In the event of there being no service or a very slow one we can tell you if there are any upgrades planned for the near future at your local exchange or alternatively offer you a satellite broadband solution:
Found your ideal property?
Use this site to see what broadband speed you will get there. If there is no line going to the property use the number of your nearest neighbour to get an indication of the likely speed you will get. Ask us to help with interpretation of the results if necessary:
Not Ready to Buy – Things may improve soon
A major investment in the broadband network started in 2013 with a planned completion date of 2022 and a budget of 20€Billion. The aim is to bring high speed broadband to about 80% of homes with towns having priority. Not all rural areas are guaranteed this improvement. Your telecom company or mairie may also have information on how and when this will affect your commune. To find out more go to this web site:
From late 2018 analogue lines will no longer be available and all calls will be put over the broadband part of the line. Trials have already started in the north east of France so call us if you want to discuss how this may affect you.
Is There a Good Signal – Should I Upgrade to 4G?
Choosing the right mobile is made much easier if you use the link below. It will tell you the coverage of each network, so you can choose the best for your area:
There is a facility to enter the type of network you want to use, so select 2G, 3G or 4G depending on the type of mobile you have. If it is 3G search using 4G as this service has a much larger coverage and if that is the case it may be worth upgrading your mobile.
Calling UK non-geographic numbers (marketing numbers) from France is expensive. UK free phone numbers are not free either as your provider has to get your call onto the UK network, for which you will be charged. Go to this web site to see if there is an equivalent national telephone number:
Stopping Cold Callers
Many of us dislike receiving cold calls from sales people. You can minimise this by going ex-directory (Liste Rouge) when you set up your line, but this may not be sufficient or you may want people to be able to find you for other reasons. Use the following web site to request your number not to be called by cold call organisations, the service is free:
Squeezing Maximum Speed from Your wifi
Our latest generation of modems have a long list of new features to help us deliver the fastest service using enhanced remote diagnostic tools. This is important because customer expectations continually increase as their service moves from ‘nice to have’ to ‘essential’.
We can now connect remotely to your line and see if there is a problem at your exchange or on the line between you and the exchange. If neither is the cause of the problem you reported and, depending on the equipment in your local exchange, we can see all the lights showing on your modem to help us diagnose the problem. We can also remotely reboot your modem and even change your wifi channel if there that will speed it up. If you are concerned about your wifi security we can even change the setting remotely for you.
But great performance does not stop with having the best technical support. Most homes will have many devices connected to the wifi. From their mobiles through to iPads and eBooks, not pads and so on, the more that are connected at the same time the slower the service. So always remember to switch off those not being used.
There are a number of other things you can do to make sure you get maximum performance day in day out.
Like property, it is all about location, location, location!
- The higher the modem is located the better. Wifi signals are sent out radially and downwards.
- Modems do not like microwaves and white goods, so kitchens are bad.
- They don’t like TVs or mirrors either.
- Every modem has several wifi channels – but are factory pre-set using just one of three. Get help to change it if necessary.
Make sure you have used your security code to stop others using your service and slowing it down.
