Collioure easily accessible: direct train line from Paris/Avignon; air to Perpignan, Nimes, Carcassonne, Beziers, Montpellier + train/car; Barcelona/Girona + train/car; or approx 12 hour drive from UK via tunnel/ferry over the amazing Massif Central and Millau Bridge!
Historic connection with Fauvism movement; particularly Matisse and Derain; many galleries and local artists; local Catalan cultural events, including dances, music, and festivals; beautiful ancient castle; church and tower partially surrounded by sea; walks in town and up surrounding hillsides; twice weekly market; wonderful fish restaurants, great pavement cafes and bars, good local wines and wonderful swimming from pretty town beaches.
Beautiful walk through local vineyards to Ermitage de Consolation (approx 1 hr), for picnicking, open air music and film in summer; annual music festival at Chateau Valmy (above Argeles) early July, together with wine tasting and good restaurant with views of coast; Collioure festival of St Vincent mid August with dancing Sardanes (Catalan), religious sea procession, and amazing firework display in sea; during summer many musicians and artists regularly put on additional events.
Very good cheap local €1 bus service; long family beaches at Argeles and St Cyprien; stunning coastal path walk to Port Vendres (real working port with great fish) and further afield towards Banyuls; hiking up into surrounding hills with stunning views from towers towards Spanish border; and great places to visit: Ceret (wonderful Modern Art); Banyuls (Malliol's former home); Villefranche (medieval walled town near Canigou) at start of Train Jaune; providing rail link with stunning views into Pyrenees; passing Font Pedrouse (hot springs at St Thomas), Mont Louis (solar powered oven), Font Romeau (ski resort, with good facilities) towards Bourg Madame.
Perpignan has a charming old quarter; ancient Royal palace; good cultural events including annual Autumn jazz festival; English cinema; language school as well as good bars, shops, restaurants and Christmas market by river.
Cadaques over Spanish border on coast is a very pretty whitewashed town associated with Dali; Girona has great restaurants and large Dali museum; Barcelona is a multicultural modern city with beaches, festivals, historic architecture, and strongly Catalan!
Good tourist office in town, helpful staff; post office, banks, supermarket, doctor, good food and clothes shops; boat trips from harbour, diving school, windsurfing, sailing hire and tuition; summer open air nightclub; tennis club, and spas in local hotels.
