Gers is a department in the Midi-Pyrenées, in the heart of Gascony. It is France’s most rural and unpopulated department. The department is quiet, traditional atmosphere has led to many celebrities buying second homes. When flying to Gers, Bordeaux and Toulouse are the most accessible airports.
The warm climate of the Midi-Pyrenées makes it a great location to buy a home, especially if you are looking for a rural French lifestyle. Gers has long been an agricultural department, this is reflected in its simple, rustic cuisine; Gers is known for its fine Foie Gras, Cassoulet and Armagnac and aside from the beautiful, unspoilt lush green countryside, Gers also has some historical and attractive towns.
These include Condom which has a magnificent cathedral and enchanting French beauty. With no direct train or airport links, it is not the most accessible of towns and this is one of the reasons why property prices have remained affordable. It has a bustling Saturday market with a myriad of stools selling all kinds of delicious local cuisine.
Mirande towards the Pyrenées is a historic market town, with a cathedral built in Flemish style. It has some reasonably priced property and lovely townhouses. Auch the department’s capital is perhaps the most expensive area in which to purchase property in Gers. Throughout Gers, there are a number of barns and farmhouses in need of renovation and the increasing popularity of Gers, ensures that it is a great place to invest in property.
