Blood RoyalBlood Royal
Eric Jager, Little, Brown, $29

A high-stakes novel on the mysterious 1407 murder of Louis of Orléans by the crime writer and medievalist. Using archives and contemporary accounts, Jager unravels the mystery as told by the Parisians who witnessed it first-hand. His passion filters into his writing, certain passages bringing to life the sights and smells of medieval Paris, though the novel’s identity comes into conflict as Jager attempts to blend fact with fiction. Meticulously referenced quotes interrupt the flow of prose and the borrowing of text from original documents isn’t always necessary. However, this style may well appeal to medieval history fans who will revel in its scrupulous historical accuracy. ★★★
