For anyone seeking a new life in France, this engaging and very readable novel works on a couple of levels. In telling the story of one extended British family’s move to Normandy – replete with all of the attendant dramas and disappointments, to balance out the excitement of making their dream come true – it presents an eyes-open, realist’s account of just what such change entails.

Anyone planning such a move would do well to read this and learn that a new location doesn’t necessarily change who you are. On another level, it’s an exceedingly jolly page-turner full of interesting characters that we can all identify with. ★★★
