Set in 1940s France and based on the posthumous best-selling work of Irène Némirovsky (who died in a Nazi concentration camp), this film gives the story a deserved ‘big budget’ treatment.

Featuring a top-notch cast – Kristin Scott-Thomas, Michelle Williams, Sam Riley, Margot Robbie and Belgian leading man du jour, Matthias Schoenaerts – it follows Lucile Angellier as she awaits news from her husband, a prisoner of war, while leading a stifled existence with her domineering mother-in-law. Lucile’s life’s turned upside down when Parisian refugees arrive, soon followed by German soldiers. A springtime must-see blockbuster. ★★★★
