French School Calendar 2007/2008The official version, but check local timetables!There are five terms in the school year starting in September (or late August in some cases). Dates vary according to the Zone you live in. The following charts show the official dates for 2007/2008 under the three Zones with the main cities of each Zone listed above. See the Map of Zones to find the Zone you are in. Green = Zone A, Blue = Zone B, Grey = Zone C. Very Important Note: Although these are the "official school calendars", due to the change to the four day week (no school on Wednesdays) and the absence of Saturday morning schooling there are an additional 12 days being taken from the holidays to compensate for the resulting loss of teaching hours. These extra days are set at a local level and you should check with your Mairie, Teacher or Academie in your departement to confirm when the 12 extra days are being taken. It will mean that some holidays are shortened - for example, in 2004 in some areas the summer holiday did not start until 13 July, although the official date shown was 30 June. Within certain guidelines it is up to the local authorities (in consultation with parent committees) to decide how to re-capture the missing days. Ironically, in some cases, there are a number of Wednesdays being taught on some calendars in combination with reductions in the length of the main holidays. This would appear to defeat the purpose of publishing official school calendars - to say the calendar system is in a state of flux would be polite. In order to try and provide more helpful information the Department of Education has recently requested the Academies to supply details of the local arrangements they have adopted.
