The city’s most famous fountain is perhaps Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins created in the 17th century by Jean-Claude Rambot. With rich cultural heritage the Aixois people enjoy many carnivals and festivals. Each July, a month-long music festival, combines a range of music genres including opera and ballet. City venues for the music festival include St-Saveur Cathedral. Classical concerts are also held in two enchanting churches the Église Ste-Marie Madeleine and the Chapelle de Ste-Catherine. In Aix and its surrounding area, there are remnants of roman architecture. Current archaeological excavations in the Ville des Tours (a medieval suburb), have unearthed the remains of an amphitheatre. While on holiday, Saint-Saveur market town is worth a visit, it is the oldest part of Aix, with narrow streets and medieval ruins. St-Saveur Cathedral combines styles of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture. Le Cours Mirabeau is the city’s grandest avenue, lined with cafés, restaurants and elegant mansions which are in parallel with century-old Plane trees. The street links the north and south of Aix; one of its many terraces is a great place to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by. It is also great area for property investment. A visit to the Museé du Viel Aix will explain the history and growth of Aix. Daily food and flower markets offer colourful fresh local produce. Restaurants worthy of a visit include Charlotte, always bustling with locals and popular for its delicious home cooking. Le Formal is growing in reputation in France’s foodie circles.
