Limousin Markets & Foires

Limousin marketsLimousin markets are a must. They are guaranteed to give one that truly French feeling. Full of interesting characters and wonderful produce, the noise and smells of French markets are like no other.
The larger markets are heaven on earth for foodies, with stall after stall offering fresh fruit and vegetables as well as locally reared meat and poultry.

It's best to get an early start when going to the region’s markets as most have packed up by lunchtime. The standard market is mainly for food and is similar to the farmers markets that are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. You will often find the stall holders have baked, grown, raised or produced in some way the products they are selling. Most stall holders will be happy to share their knowledge and expertise with you to ensure you enjoy their product at its best.

The foires are usually held once or twice a month and are larger than the markets. They include more non-food stalls selling clothing, hardware, kitchen ware and more. Look out for the traditional underwear stalls with oversized salmon pink corsets and the knife stalls (where you can handle and buy the most terrifying looking knives).
Listed below are the markets and foires held throughout the region.

Correze Markets
Creuse Markets
Haute Vienne Markets

Vide Grenier and Brocantes In Limousin

Limousin BrocanteWe are all familiar with the car boot sales that can seen in the UK every weekend. Similar sales are also held throughout France and are equally as popular. In France such sales are most commonly known as vide grenier, or attic sales. These sales are not only great opportunity to find some genuine bargains but also a chance to see some extraordinairy articles from bygone times. You will of course find the usual eccelectic mix of old records and tacky ornaments, however French junk always seems so much more interesting than that of the UK. There are a variety of sales of this type promoted under the various titles of braderie (street sale), foire aux puces (flea market), bric à brac, troc (barter) and vente de garage (garage sale). Some sales may be a mixture of antique dealers and collectors, where prices can be a little more prohibitive but there are still often some good buys if you know your market and have good bartering skills (in French). The sales throughout the region are held predominantly in the summer months as part of other celebration days and festivals, although several can be found throughout the colder months inside village halls and public buildings. It costs only a couple of euros to take part in the sale so if you have still got boxes you have not unpacked since moving to France, what a great way to make a few euros whilst practicing your French.
