Two New Eco Houses

Thierry Sauret, 57, a retired train driver, has built two new houses in the Haute Vienne town of Bussière Galant. The two properties, which have taken two years to build, are to be rented out to local families. The houses have been built using the latest ecological sound materials, so they will consume the least energy possible. Throughout the cities of France more and more of this type of home are being built, particularly by investors to put on the rental market, but there are still relatively few eco houses in the rural areas such as the Limousin.

The propertys have, insolating bricks, wood heating, water recycling systems and many more eco features. The only omission is solar panels which Mr Sauret said he could not afford to install and keep the rent of the properties at the current regional market value of between 570 - 550 euros per 90 m2 - 80 m2.

A GEM to Help Depression

Those who suffer from depression know only too well the desperate feeling of isolation the illness can bring. The self help group (GEM) has been set up to help those with mental health problems to meet others in similar situations and share problems and experiences.
The P.R.I.S.M. association. (Prevention, reintegration, information in mental health), chaired by the doctor Emile Roger Lombertie, has a branch of GEM in Limoges and Saint-Junien, and building on the success of these groups will be opening a new session on 13th May at Saint-Yrieix La Perche.

In partnership with the C.H. Esquirol and the UNAFAM (national Union of the friends and the family of psychic patients), GEM has been set up to help those who suffer from psychological troubles and offer them ideas on ways to break the isolation. The group provide ideas and strategies to help members to overcome the day to day difficulties brought about by their illness.
It is believed around a quarter of the population of Limousin seek help from psychiatrist services or have psychological problems at some time in their lives.

Correze Charity Worker Killed

The public prosecutor's department of Tulle, yesterday opened a preliminary inquiry in to the murder, of Pascal Marlinge a Corrézien humanitarian worker. Mr Marlinge was killed, on Thursday, in the east of the Chad. An autopsy of the body has yet to take place. Pascal Marlinge worked for the English charity Save the Children
Native of the Lot region, this 49 year old humanitarian worker had lived for 4 years, with his wife and one of his two daughters, in the Correze commune of Seilhac. He was killed on Thursday by a group of armed men while he was in a convoy with two other cars, he was with a driver from Save the Children and two vehicles of other humanitarian agencies.
The incident took place as the convoy neared the Sudanese border, in a very unstable sector, in the grip of a civil war. The former sales manager, became a humanitarian worker at the age of 28. He has since regularly undertaken many precarious missions notably in Afghanistan, or in Iraq where he had managed refugee camps.

Roof Repair Ends in Tragedy

A man from Saint Clément, Correze was killed in an accident at his home this week. Seventy three year old Roger Chassagne was attempting to carry out minor repairs to the roof of his home when the roof gave way under his weight. The man was rushed to Tulle hospital before being transferred by helicopter to the main hospital in Limoges.

Toddler Drowns

A terrible accident took place this week at a small lake in the Correze town of Moustier Ventadour. A young family were enjoying the sun on the border of the lake when they noticed their two and half year old daughter was missing. The alarm was raised and a search undertaken. A short while later the body of the infant was discovered floating in the water. The emergency services attempted to revive the little girl, but sadly their attempts were in vain. Police have opened an inquiry in to the incident.

Scanner at St Junien

The crane next to the hospital which has dominated the skyline of St Junien for such a long has finally gone. Since 3rd March 3rd the new scanner at St Junien has finally come in to operation.
Guy Migaud who first planned the new facility in 2004, has since left the hospital but the project has been seen through to completion by his successor Alain Gouneau. Pierre Allard, Chaiman of the board of the hospital said a facility as good as St Junien hospital deserves its own scanning facility.
The scanner is the first equipment to be called in to action when examining and assessing patients with a multitude of different illnesses, as well as serious head and other injuries. The staff are delighted with the new scanner as often patients who need the scanner are too unstable to be moved to Limoges hospital for scans. Doctors at St Junien say they will now be able to save more lives through quicker diagnosis and treatment
The cost of the project was in the region of 3.000.0000 euros for the building and 500.000 euro for the machine. The funding came via a public/private initiative.

And Finally ………Le Pont

The three bank holidays in the Limousin over the last two weeks gave the area a real holiday atmosphere, with car boot sales, plant sales and fete days held in many villages throughout the region. In the main the weather was kind, but most of us have had the rumble of thunder in the evenings as the temperatures rose. Many workers used the popular method of bridging ( le pont) to link the bank holidays together to give themselves the chance to enjoy a couple of long bank holiday weekends.
