Construction On Target

The construction of the new sports complex at St Yrieix la Perche, Haute Vienne is still running to schedule. Despite the extremely wet weather of late, causing the builders a few headaches, they have managed to keep everything pretty much on track. Traffic was halted in the town this week as trucks carrying their huge loads of structural material wended their way to the site. Part of the wall of the nearby lycee Darnet had to be removed to allow the equipment to be manipulated in to place. The giant beams have now been installed along with 4 300 m3 of the concrete .
The plumbing and heating systems are currently being fitted along with the electricity and lifts.Work has also started on the first of the complex’s swimming pools and one of the gymnasiums.
Once completed,it is hoped that the state of the art facility will be a real asset to the town and the region.
Three more major construction works are also currently underway in St Yrieix. Water treatment and purification works , improvements to traffic circulation and water mains improvements. The works began on April 14th and will include replacement and repairs to many of the town’s pavements. In July, major road repairs are also to be carried out by the General Council . This work alone is expected to cost in the region of 750 000 euros.
The roundabout close to the bank Credit Agricole is going to be enlarged and the granite fountain, currently at the road side will be moved to form the roundabout centerpiece. The temporary roundabout,in place for the last 12 months has proved to be inadequate and this will be taken in to account when the new one is installed. The larger roundabout does however mean there will no longer be any car parking bays in front of the bank.

VTT in Creuse

More than just a leisure activity, mountain biking for many is a real passion. Nowhere more so, than in the Limousin department of Creuse. Each year literally thousands of people take part in the sport in Creuse both competitively and just for fun.
“The Creuse is the perfect area for anyone who enjoys mountain biking”, describes Alain Menut, president of the Creuse Oxygenates, a group who cover all aspects of the sport and organize regular competitions. “One has only to see the vast array of competitions and circuits available to see that there really is something for everyone, even if you just enjoy watching .”

Arson Attack in Brive

On Tuesday evening, a collection of old buildings in the town of Brive, close to the stadium were destroyed in a particularly spectacular fire. On Tuesday late in the afternoon, at about 6:50 pm, the inhabitants of Brive saw an immense black column of smoke rising in the blue sky. Curious, many people made their way to the area to discover the cause and found around thirty fire officers trying to get the blaze under control. After half an hour the flames started to recede. Investigators believe the fire may have been started deliberately on the 1,000m2 plot. The area had been a popular hang out for youths, some of whom were seen running from the scene shortly before the fire took hold.

Assault in Chalus

A 17-year-old boy has appeared in court this week on charges of sexual assault. The youth is said to have sexually assaulted a girl of the same age from Châlus, Haute Vienne, at the end of April. Having spent an evening with a group of friends, the man took his victim behind a house in the town and threatened her with a knife before carrying out the serious sexual assault. The victim managed finally to flee the scene and reported the incident to the police. The case continues

The report is based on a study of 17,283 businesses, 23.1% of whom say they will be looking for staff in 2008. Many of these businesses are in the construction and building sector, but also the seasonal and catering trades. The current most sought after skills are qualified nursery nurses and qualified builders.

Strawberrys or not Strawberrys

The holiday feast of strawberrys will soon be held in the Correze town of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. One strawberry grower who is part of this great annual event is wondering if he will be able to continue. Jean-Pierre Faurel, is repeatedly asking himself
"Should I stop or should I continue strawberries? ". Every year, for the last ten seasons, Jean-Pierre asks himself the same question. With the costs of the production, sale, the collection and all the other associated costs , this farmer of Astaillac, wonders if it is all worth it? Mr Faurel also grows, raspberries and walnuts, and is increasingly noticing that the strawberries are costing him more to produce than he gets back. But Jean-Pierre Faurel is desperate to continue to immortalize the know-how inherited from his parents, one of the first families to generate the tradition of the planting of strawberries in the area of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne .Mr Faurel says the market has also been hit hard by strawberry production from Spain, Morroco and even Germany. But, for this year at least, the festival is safe with the 5 tons of gariguette strawberrys almost ready for the 17th fete de fraise celebrations. Around 20,000 visitors celebrate in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne each year.

And Finally… Hitching a Ride

On Sunday, at about 11 am, a 58-year-old man from Panazol was out enjoying his usual cycle ride, when he was joined by a buzzard. " I felt something on my helmet , then I saw the shadow on the road and I realized that a buzzard had landed on my helmet! The bird sat for several seconds before returning to the skies”. The cyclist, who has covered many thousands of kilommetres on his bike over the years says this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to him!
