Local News 17/12 - 23/12/2005A teacher stabbed in the LimousinIt has been revealed that the secondary school teacher at the Lycée Etampes, Karen Monet-Toutain, who was stabbed last Friday often finished the day in tears following threats of rape and murder from her pupils. The husband of Karen stated “Karen had already told the school on numerous occasions that she was being threatened”. During an art lesson on Friday, Karen asked the teenager to remove a coat he was wearing, the boy refused and stabbed the teacher with a craft knife. Karen is still in hospital suffering from wounds to the abdomen, elbow and right shoulder. The 18 year-old male pupil who is guilty of stabbing the teacher gave himself up to the police late on Saturday evening. ************************** Christmas for everyone The French popular rescue group (SPF) have organised a Christmas meal for at least one hundred people in the region who are either currently receiving financial help towards food and single mothers or fathers with children. Christmas time can be difficult for single parents or people with financial difficulties, which is why the SPF want to prepare a meal to celebrate Christmas. An afternoon at the Christmas fair has also been organised for the children. The celebrations are to take place at the Saint-Joesph church where ten volunteers will prepare the meal themselves. ************************** A woman enjoys her soup as her house goes up in flames At around 7.30 on Saturday evening two men from the police force in Limoges were on patrol when they noticed large quantities of smoke coming out of a chimney. They immediately entered the house where they found the owner Huguette Gautier eating her soup in the kitchen. Huguette who is in her sixties thought she heard a noise but did not think for one second that her house was on fire. Before the fire brigade even got to the premises the fire spread throughout the house completely destroying it. The cause of the fire is yet to be established, the police however suspect it was a deliberate act by vandals. ************************** For the well being of Limousin children In the Limousin, antibiotics are still being over prescribed to children according to statistics from the Pasteur Institute. The consumption of antibiotics has been in decline since 2001 elsewhere in France, in the Limousin however there has been a rise by 4.3%, 26% above the national average. Due to these alarming figures URCAM, the Regional union for health insurance has decided to reiterate the important message regarding antibiotics by launching a large campaign to better inform families in the region. During December URCAM will be sending out 34.119 fact sheets to families with children between the ages of 0 and 5. The fact sheet will contain vital information about antibiotics and when to use them and when not to. Indeed many families still believe that antibiotics are the ‘miracle’ medication that will treat any illness. They are unaware that in most illnesses such as a virus, throat infection and colds, antibiotics will not treat the illness. ************************** Working towards an easier integration A recent meeting organised by the Chambre de Metier, the Chambre de Commerce and the West Limousin council focused on the British living and relocating to the region. Although this is not a recent phenomenon, the number of British arriving in the region is continuing to rise and according to figures there are now 800 families living in the West of the region. The meeting specially focussed on British business owners either currently running a business or planning to create one. Plans were discussed to organise themed evenings and to create a bilingual welcome guide. Furthermore in 2006 a bilingual open evening will be held once a month to provide information on general topics such as how to fill in a tax form, health insurance, social security, building plans, and creating a business. ************************ Discover Limoges by candle light During the Christmas period the tourist office in Limoges has organised candle lit visits to the underground tunnels of the jardin de l’Evêché-the Bishops’ garden. Focussing on the Christmas spirit of stories and myths, these guided tours are a combination of historical explanations and legends. During the tour explanations as to where the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree came from and the mystery of the Monts de Blond are given. The tradition of decorating the Christmas tree began 500 years ago when people started to hand apples from the tree, which they regarded as heaven on earth. They also hung candles to represent the stars that guided the three kings to the stable where Jesus Christ was born. To find out about the mystery behind the Monts de Blond a visit to the Bishops garden would be certainly be worthwhile! *********************** An important time of year for a wrapping paper company The wrapping company Sopasac in Saint-Junien has been in business for the last 80 years but with trends changing over the last few years and more and more shops offering a gift-wrapping service, the company has had to adapt and become more diversified. Ten years ago wrapping paper represented 80% of the companies business, nowadays it only represents 35%. Due to this dramatic fall in business Sopana currently focuses on producing personalised wrapping paper for the bigger companies who use this to show off their brand name as a form of publicity. Furthermore the company now produces eco friendly paper and bags, notably recyclable bags for the big French company “Nature et Decouverte”. ************************ Bellac: 44th fatal car accident in the Haute-Vienne A fatal accident occurred on Tuesday evening at around 9.30 on the N147 at the entrance to Bellac. A 36 year-old man from Saint-Yrieix-sur-Charente lost control of his car on a bend and his car collided with an oncoming lorry. The fire brigade and ambulance service quickly arrived at the scene but sadly they were unable to save the driver. The cause of the accident has yet to be established and although tests were carried out for drugs and alcohol, so far the results have not been given to the police. *********************** Agricultures concerned by Blairs budget Representatives from the Haute-Vienne agricultural council met in Limoges on Wednesday to discuss the future of rural development within France, especially in the Limousin. The main topic on the agenda was the European budget currently being laid out by Tony Blair for the period 2006-2013. Farmers in the Haute-Vienne are particularly concerned by plans to cut by 30% aid for rural development, which incorporates financial help towards purchasing buildings to rear cattle and sheep and also to help set up an agricultural business. Following the meeting on Wednesday, the agricultural council called upon the State to clarify the consequences for France from the tightening of the budget. Bernard Goupy, the president of the agricultural council explained: “Blair’s budget is going to create huge losses for French farmers and in return we will receive no compensation”. He added: “The regional council is going to have to tighten it’s budget even more than it does already but we do not have enough resources to go around. Already the situation is critical and I don’t see how we can make more of an effort than we already are to help local farmers.” The Limousin Times 19/07/2010- 25/07/2010 Home Page |
